To stay safe yourself and look out for family, friends and vulnerable members of our communities in these conditions, we have put together some advice. It will also help us to ensure that in the event you require an ambulance, that we can get to you as soon as possible<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[weather]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Wintry conditions put us under pressure because snow and ice mean more people dial 999 after slipping or falling over, and the cold can make existing conditions, like asthma, worse. Flu and certain other diseases that cause colds and sore throats, spread more easily during winter months. Cases of Norovirus &#8211; the winter vomiting bug &#8211; tend to rise. Cold weather can also lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression, as the lower temperatures put added strain onto our bodies<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When snow falls, it can also make it harder for us as your local Community First Responders, and our frontline ambulance colleagues to reach patients<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If you can, try and heat your home to a minimum of 18 degrees. Do not try and heat your home with a gas stove or over as this can bring the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-949 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/wmasdev.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/01\/staywell-graphic.jpg?w=243&amp;h=486\" alt=\"staywell-graphic\" width=\"243\" height=\"486\" data-attachment-id=\"949\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/wmas.nhs.uk\/?p=949\" data-orig-file=\"\" data-orig-size=\"\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"[]\" data-image-title=\"Lorry overturns\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;Wednesday 10&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;\/sup&gt; April 2013 \u2013 3.45pm \u2013 Suzie Fothergill. \u00a0&lt;\/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;A man has been taken to hospital following an incident in Birmingham today.&lt;\/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to a road traffic collision on the A446 Pool Island in Coleshill at approximately 7.20am this morning.&lt;\/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, a senior paramedic ambulance officer and a community first responder were dispatched to the scene.&lt;\/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: \u201cOn arrival at the scene crews found a lorry that had overturned on to its side.&lt;\/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;\u201cThe driver of the lorry, a man, had sustained a head injury. The man was treated at the scene and was fully immobilised before being conveyed to Heartlands Hospital for further assessment and treatment.\u201d&lt;\/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;\u00a0&lt;\/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Ends&lt;\/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;\u00a0&lt;\/p&gt; \" data-medium-file=\"\" data-large-file=\"\" \/>To make sure you stay safe when it\u2019s cold and icy outside:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dress appropriately and wear sensible footwear<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Wrap up warm<\/strong> with several layers of loose fitting clothing, instead of a single heavy layer, Wear water-repellent outer garments, a hat, mittens and waterproof boots<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stock up on medicine<\/strong>, especially if you have a pre-existing condition such as asthma<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check on your neighbours<\/strong>, especially older people to make sure they have everything they need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You should always think carefully before dialling 999 and consider other healthcare options. If you have a minor illness or injury, think about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using your local pharmacist or NHS walk-in centre<\/li>\n<li>Calling NHS 111<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Make your own way to hospital \u2013 going in an ambulance does not mean you will get seen any quicker<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cold weather, ice and snow can put lives as risk.
